वर्ष 1999 में वैज्ञानिक पैट्रिका हंट (patricia hunt) ने अचानक ही इस चीज की खोज की थी कि बीमार मुक्त केमिकल भी खतरनाक है। उन्होंने पाया कि लैब में बीपीए केमिकल से साफ किये पिंजरे में रखी गई चुहिया के असामान्य क्रोमोसोम वाले अंडों में वृद्धि हो गई।
20 साल पहले छपा यह अध्ययन पूरा तरह योजनाबद्ध नहीं था। टीम ने अब फिर से नया अध्ययन किया। उसने जानबूझकर एक पिंजरे को उस बीपीए मुक्त केमिकल से संक्रमित किया, जिसे सुरक्षित माना जाता है। इसके बाद उन्होंने पाया कि अंडों और वीर्य दोनों को उत्पादन में समस्या आने लगी। यह अध्ययन जर्नल ‘करंट बायोलॉजी’ में छपा है।
टीम ने पाया कि बीपीए-मुक्त बोतल, कप, पिंजरे व अन्य सामान में भी यही समस्याएँ हैं। इस शोध से एक बार फिर से प्लास्टिक के उपयोग से होने वाले नुकसान की ओर ध्यान केन्द्रित किया है। वॉशिंगटन स्टेट यूनिवर्सिटी की पैट्रिका हंट का कहना है, ‘हमने टूटे हुए पिंजरों के संक्रमण की समस्या को देखने की कोशिश की थी, लेकिन इस बार जो प्रभाव देखने को मिले हैं वह पहले से भी ज्यादा हैं।’
टीम ने यह भी पाया कि बच्चों के खिलौनों, चिकित्सा उपकरण और खाने की पैकिंग में इस्तेमाल किये जाने वाले बीपीए-मुक्त प्लास्टिक से कैंसर, प्रजनन और अन्य तरह के जोखिम बढ़ते हैं। शोध में यह बात भी सामने आई कि प्लास्टिक के जो प्रभाव चूहों पर देखने को मिले हैं, ठीक वैसे ही प्रभाव इंसानों पर भी हो सकते हैं।
टूटा पुराना प्लास्टिक घातक
शोधकर्ता हंट का कहना है कि लोगों को एक ही चीज पर ध्यान देना चाहिए कि उस उत्पाद में चाहे कोई भी केमिकल हो, लेकिन अगर वह कहीं से टूटा हुआ है या बहुत पुराना है, तो उसे सुरक्षित नहीं कहा जा सकता। वह कहती हैं कि प्लास्टिक की भारी माँग की वजह से निर्माता कम्पनियाँ इसे सुरक्षित बनाने के लिये नियमों को सख्त करने में आलस दिखा रही हैं।
इस तरह हुआ था शोध
वैज्ञानिक पैट्रिका हंट की लैब में एक पिंजरे में चुहिया को रखा गया था। एक दिन सफाईकर्मी ने इस पिंजरे को जिस डिटर्जेंट से साफ किया, उसमें बीपीए केमिकल था। करीब एक हफ्ते तक चुहिया पर नजर रखी गई तो पाया कि उसके हार्मोन में बदलाव हो रहे हैं। करीब 20 साल बाद फिर से किये गए अध्ययन में भी परिणाम अचानक ही सामने आये।
क्या है बीपीए
बीपीए (बिस्फेनोल-ए) के एक रसायन है। 1890 में पहली बार इसकी खोज हुई। मगर 1950 में यह महसूस किया गया कि इसका इस्तेमाल मजबूत व लचीले पॉली कार्बोनेट प्लास्टिक बनाने में हो सकता है। मगर इसके नुकसान के प्रमाण सामने आने के बाद निर्माताओं ने बीपीए-मुक्त उत्पाद बनाने की शुरुआत की।
